One of the most interesting places in the world for concentrated study and creation of
indigenous musical traditions for the church is at the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music in
Quezon City, Manila. Founded by the composer Francisco Feliciano in 1980, it continues to serve
the churches in Asia both as a school and as a retreat and conference centre for issues of the
Arts and Christianity in Asia. I teach there from time to time, and am an occasional visiting
artist at Samba Likhaan, the Artists Village attached to the Institute. My next visit is planned
for November of 2006.
